Spirits (lat.: spiritus = spirit) are liquids containing alcohol that are intended for human consumption and have a minimum alcohol content of 15 percent by volume. In addition, a spirit drink must be produced directly or by mixing a spirit drink with one or more products.
Direct production of spirits
The direct production of spirits includes, firstly, distillation from naturally fermented products such as fruit, grain or potatoes.
The second direct production method, known as maceration, is used to create the aroma of spirits. During maceration, certain components such as color and aroma substances are extracted from fruits or roots to form aromas. Extracted means that plant substances such as raspberries are placed in ethyl alcohol and treated in such a way that the aromatic substances of the raspberries are transferred to the alcohol.
