Malibu is a clear fruit liqueur made from white rum, sugar and coconut extract.
The product was conceived in the 1980s by English businessman Tom Jago, who also developed Baileys Irish Cream. The coconut liqueur was intended to simplify the production of piña coladas. The name presumably refers to the beach town of Malibu in California. The brand has been owned by Pernod Ricard since 2005 and is produced in Spain and elsewhere.
Malibu is used for mixing in various cocktails. It is rarely drunk straight, usually mixed with pineapple, orange, passion fruit or cherry juice, but sometimes also with lemonade (e.g. Sprite). Malibu can also be mixed with milk to give it a coconut flavor similar to coconut milk.
