Description

This legendary South Tyrolean red grape variety is also known as “the queen of Vernatsch.” The steep slopes of the Sankt Magdalena wine-growing region near Bolzano provide the ideal microclimate for this indigenous variety to develop its full range of distinctive, intense, and fruity aromas. Sankt Magdalener is characterized by a fine yet intense structure and is delicate and elegant on the palate.

Location: Vineyards around St. Magdalena near Bolzano (300-350m)
Exposure: South and southeast
Soils: Moraine debris soils
Training system: Guyot

Vine age
20 to 50 years

Harvest
Early October; harvesting and grape selection by hand.

Maturation
Fermentation in steel. Followed by malolactic fermentation and maturation in steel tanks.

Serving suggestion
St. Magdalener is an excellent accompaniment to starters such as Schüttelbrotravioli, but also braised meat, meat platters, bacon, and cheese. Well chilled, it also goes well with fish.
